Getting an “A” from the Cinema Evaluation Board these days is like buying a soda from the nearest sari-sari store, it’s easy. But Kimmy Dora is a film that truly deserves it.
Some films get an “A” from CEB and a thumbs down from the critics. Some films get an “A” from CEB, thumbs up from the critics but ended up “flop” at the box-office.
This time, an indie film with a commercial format like Kimmy Dora, which got an “A” from the CEB and a “thumbs up” from the critics, could potentially be a box-office hit.
From the success of its premiere night at SM Megamall last Tuesday, Kimmy Dora is posed to be the kind of film to conquer all – critics, the government incentive program and the movie-goers. It just need to surpass the P100 million mark and a sequel could not be far behind.
This makes Eugene Domingo as the next big comedy star! Her talent in making people laugh shines throughout the film. Furthermore, she is now being labeled as the “Diamond Comedy Queen”!
Kimmy Dora is now showing in more than 100 theaters nationwide INCLUDING SM Cinemas.
“…it’s a far better comedy than the mainstream establishment has produced in a long time,” Philbert Dy (Click the City)
Spring Films released the official poster and promotional stills from the upcoming comedy movie “Kimmy Dora: Kambal sa Kyeme.”
Kimmy Dora is Eugene Domingo’s first starring role on the big screen. Also starring are Dindong Dantes, Zanjoe Marudo, Baron Geisler, Meriam Quiambao and Ariel Ureta under the helm of Bb. Joyce Bernal.
Distributed by Star Cinema, premiered in Cannes, opened Cinemalaya, great promotions with matching Bench billboards, what went wrong?
Manila is a two-part indie film that features Piolo Pascual, who is also a co-producer for this film, and is helmed by critically acclaimed directors Adolf Alix, Jr. and Raya Martin. The film is inspired by Ishmael Bernal’s 1980 movie Manila By Night and Lino Brocka’s 1979 masterpiece Jaguar.
It had its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival in France. It’s also the opening film for the 2009 Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival. It was distributed by Star Cinema in 17 selected theaters, mostly in Mega Manila. And when it comes to promotion, no less than Bench helped with its billboards.
It’s box-office haul was P700,130.64. It grossed only P200,000 on opening day. Some theaters that averaged as low as P5,000, made it a first day, last day opening.
So what went wrong? Perhaps the film is not commercial enough? Perhaps it only caters to the highly intellectual movie-goers? Or perhaps a black and white movie is perceived “boring” by Pinoys.
It may be a flop at the box-office but come awards night next year, it could be one of the contenders. Quality doesn’t always translate to box-office success, you know, and vice versa. Transformers 2 were a critical flop but it became a monster hit. Boys Don’t Cry and Monster’s Ball were box-office flops but they are Oscar winners.
And as for Piolo, as first time producer, we can only say “charge to experience.” At least he had the courage to make an art film rather than a mediocre comedy like Oh My Girl (I’m really frustrated with this movie).
Finally, Star Cinema confirmed that Love Me Again had been very successful on its box office result especially on its first day of showing because it grossed more than 15 Million. Angel Locsin was very ecstatic with the result of her first movie under Star Cinema. Then, she gladly says that after this movie she will be having a movie with Aga Muhlach, entitled Love in Heaven. It is expected to be shown on theaters this late 2009 under Star Cinema.
Aga, excited kay Angel By: Nel Alejandrino MORE Christmas wishes.
Aga Muhlach – In a recent conversation with him, we asked Aga what he would want most for Christmas.
Ang sagot niya: “For the years, yes, years, I feel so blessed na so much so, whatever other blessings na dumarating sa akin at sa aking pamilya ngayon, I considered bonuses na lang.
“Napakabait sa akin ng Diyos. Sa aking pamilya. Every day na lang, ’di ko siya nakakalimutang pasalamatan.
“OA man itong ituring. Pero ang pinaka-utmost wish na puwede kong hilingin for Christmas ay for the much-talked about financial crisis sa buong mundo ay ’di gaanong makaapekto sa ating mga Pilipino. Lalo na sa ating mga taga-industriya. As it is, hirap na nga tayo.
“Sana, for the year, 2009, makabangon tayo. Lalo na ang industriyang mahal nating lahat.”
Told that in an interview with Angel Locsin, during the one-on-one interview with her after the presscon of Love Me Again, her first movie with Star Cinema with Piolo Pascual, Angel expressed excitement over the prospect of doing a project with him, ani Aga: “Tell her, the feeling is mutual.”
As it is, Star Cinema has already told Aga they want him na gumawa ng two movies in 2009.
LOVE ME AGAIN already reached 80 Million Pesos from January 15 to January 27 (13days screening with 75 cinemas nationwide, other cinemas from Mindanao will open this week particulary the affected areas of typhoon during its opening, which will surely add and help the total gross of the said movie. In addition, STAR CINEMA will announced its TOTAL GROSSED in THE BUZZ/ E-LIVE this week, Angel and Piolo also will be guesting in different shows of ABS-CBN to thank their nationwide fans who supported them.
The International screenings are excluded. Hopefully by the end of the week this movie will reached 100 Million Pesos, as most of us predicted. Again, Congratulations Angel and Piolo!
The Star Cinema movie Love Me Again (Land Down Under) starring Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual has grossed P53.2 million on its 2nd week, similar to the 2-weeks gross of the GMA/Regal movie One True Love.
Last week, Love Me Again topped Philippine Box-Office by raking in P29.48 million beating Hollywood films debuting at the same period like Bride Wars, Changeling and the Haunting of Molly Hartley.
Love Me Again is at the same pace as the movie One True Love last year. The Marian Rivera-Dingdong Dantes movie also registered P53.2 Million on its 2nd week of screening.
For further comparison, let’s check the Hollywood movies that Love Me Again and One True Love have pitted during their screenings.
One True Love succumbed to the Hollywood monster hit movie Twilight which premiered on its second week of running. Twilight hit a whopping P84.6 million at the Philippine Box-Office on the weekend of Nov. 26-30, 2008, the same period One True Love is running on its second week. Quantum of Solace was also running at that time. Please take note that Twilight became the top-grossing Hollywood movie in the Philippines for the whole year of 2008 and the latest James Bond film was one of the Top 10.
Love Me Again, on the other hand, succumbed to another vampire movie Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. It was also pitted against Jim Carrey’s Yes Man, Adam Sandler’s Bedtime Stories and Brad Pitt’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. But the box-office gross of these films, even combined, cannot match the one-week gross of Twilight.
This analysis is for the sake of argument as the two romantic films One True Love and Love Me Again both hit the two-weeks gross P53.2 million using the conversion rate on the time these movies were shown.
Philippine Box Office (January 21 to 25, 2009)
1. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans - P19.58 M 2. Love Me Again - P11.71 M 3. Yes Man - P7.01 M 4. Bedtime Stories - P4.64 M 5. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - P4.11 M 6. Bride Wars - P3.15 M 7. Transporter 3 - P2.21 M 8. The Abandoned - P1.23 M 9. The Haunting of Molly Hartley - P1.19 M 10. Changeling - P0.27 M

The chemistry between ABS-CBN top actor Piolo Pascual and GMA’s top actress Marian Rivera could create fireworks if they ever team up on a movie.

Back in the country after attending two successful US premieres of her first film For the First Time, KC Concepcion is happy and looking forward to doing more projects soon.At the Sony Armed & Fabulous product launch held last Sept 19 at the Rockwell Tent, the Sony Cyber-shot spokes model shares that there are two things she is looking forward to the most right now: attending the European premiere of her film with Richard and hoping to share the big screen with heartthrob Piolo Pascual. “I just attended the For the First Time premiere in Los Angeles and San Francisco. It was a good turnout. I didn’t know that there’s so much support from Filipino fans there. It was both an exciting and fulfilling experience for me. I know they were really enjoyed the film. Of course it would’ve been nice if Richard was there too but he was also busy here. We’re going to Austria next week for our Vienna premiere. For the first time there’s a Vienna premiere for a Star Cinema movie so it’s something special,” she admits.
KC also admits that out of all the possible leading men out there, she hopes that she can one day do a project with Piolo. “I would like to be more active in my roles and I would like to work with Piolo Pascual. I know he’s a great actor and I know I’ll learn a lot from him. And he’s also a good friend so I know we’ll be comfortable with each other if we’ll be working together,” she shares. Slated to do a Valentine movie with Richard next year with GMA films, KC hopes her fans will be just as supportive as they were with For the First Time. “Sana kiligin ulit sila. It’s going to be with a different film company so it’s going to be something different. A different director and a different story. So sana yung mga nakakita at nagkagusto sa For the First Time, ay magustuhan ulit nila. Hopefully, ma-accept nila yung mga bagong darating,” she confides.
The talented young actress-product endorser is also proud to show off her movie to the kababayans in Vienna, Austria. “I know excited na rin yung mga kababayan natin doon. Natutuwa rin ako na ngayon napapadala natin yung ating mga pelikula sa ibang bansa. Excited na ako ipakita yung pelikula sa mga kababayan natin doon. Gusto ko rin makita kung paano sila mabuhay doon. At the same time, maipapakita rin namin yung itsura ng Santorini, Greece at para maipagmalaki sa kanila na meron tayong pelikulang ganito,” she excitedly shares. KC also shared that she learned a lot of lessons while doing the movie. “Of course in For the First Time was my first time, which is exactly why we named it that (laughs). My partnership with Richard was great. I learned from him professionally. He comes on time and he treats people well. He doesn’t complain. I also learned a lot from Tito Philip Salvador (who played her dad in the film). He always gave me advice about being patient with the craft. And of course kay Direk Joyce Bernal natutunan ko na magpakatotoo sa lahat ng ginagawa ko. Kung sino ka, yun ka eh kaya yun ang ipakita mo dahil yun dapat,” she concludes.

Locsin that she is ready to take all the risks while filming the movie.
"Actually excited ako dagdag kwento ko din yon pero huwag naman sana," she said.

Piolo Pascual talks about 'Land Down Under' Popular actor Piolo Pascual shared his excitement for his upcoming movie project with actress Angel Locsin entitled “Land Down Under.”
“Iba iyong pressure, iba iyong ‘Lobo’. But for a movie it’s a different challenge definitely all together,” Pascual told abs-cbnNEWS.com.
The actor said that aside from doing a first movie with Locsin, it’s also his first time to work with movie director Rory Quintos.
Pascual said that he and Locsin will be shooting in Bukidnon and in Darwin, Australia for their cowboy/cowgirl scenes.
“I’m looking forward to it, at first time ko po itong Bukidnon and we'll be filming in Australia as well. So it’s definitely a welcome challenge,” he said.
“I always look forward to the movies that I do, because iba lagi ang approach. And with ‘direk’ Rory you can be sure na it’s a nice movie na hindi pababayaan, after all her critically acclaimed movies."
Pascual shared that as preparations for his role in the movie, he and Locsin are now training for horseback-riding under Vic Barba and actress-equestrienne Mikee Cojuangco.

They will also do some of the popular sports in Bukidonl.
“Marami, all the sports they do in Bukidnon iyong how they pin down iyong bull or how they race with the horses. It’s gonna be pretty physical,” Pascual said.
The actor admitted he had some misgivings in portraying the role of cowboy, since he has to act as if he is really experienced and trained to be one.
“With the trainings that we’ve had for more than a month so far po ay nagugustuhan ko naman iyong pagho-horsebackriding. I never thought that I was really gonna enjoy, masakit at first,” he said.
Pascual shared that for the first day of his horseback riding training he got blisters since he didn’t know how to ride. But as time went by he got the hang of it.
“It's something that I enjoyed doing and I feel good knowing na hindi siya mahirap na trabaho kasi na-e-enjoy ko siya,” he said.
To ensure the safety of Pascual and Locsin the ABS-CBN management got them insured while doing the movie.
