One Minute Movie Review: ‘Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang’

“Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang” is a movie about how the mythical affliction of a woman engenders her to lose sanity until she becomes a monster.

Main Cast: Derek Ramsay, Erich Gonzales
Supporting Cast: Epy Quizon, Mark Gil, Tetchie Agbayani, Mon Confiado, Mark Gil, Sharlene San Pedro
Director: Richard Somes
Genre: Horror, Suspense
Released By: Star Cinema for Skylight Films
MTRCB Rating: R-13
Opening Date: March 14, 2012

Gist: A married couple struggle to conceive a baby. They turn to excruciating religious rituals to overcome their plight and it paid off as the wife finally bears a child. On the day of the child’s birth, they found the baby dead. Feeling betrayed by God, the wife throws her faith and succumbed to the darkness inside her.

The Positive: Richard Somes does a superb job of establishing a nostalgic ambiance in “Corazon” as reflected in the movie’s lush visuals.

The Negative: The storytelling could have been more solid if only Somes had focused on strengthening the titular character.
