‘Miss You Like Crazy’ Hits P128.7M in 3 Weeks

Star Cinema’s romantic movie, “Miss You Like Crazy,” raked in P128.7 million in three weeks based on the latest report by Box Office Mojo.

Miss You Like Crazy is the first certified blockbuster movie for 2010 for being the first Pinoy film to surpass the P100 million mark at the box office.

Alice in Wonderland topped the local box office race for the second week in a row. Avatar, on the other hand, remain the top-grossing film in the Philippines for 2010 so far.

It’s Official, “Miss You Like Crazy” a Blockbuster Hit! Grosses P115-M in 2 Weeks

Nabasa siguro ng Box Office Mojo ang post namin dito yesterday sa AccessPinoy about the un-inclusion of Miss You Like Crazy sa tally ng pelikula nila during the February 24-28, 2010 timeframe. Today, in-update na nila ang kanilang box office tally sa Philippines at napasama na ang Miss You Like Crazy ng Star Cinema. The movie starred John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo, and helmed by Direk Cathy Garcia-Molina.

On its first week, Miss You Like Crazy ranked #1 among films showing in theaters with gross receipts of P67.6 million. It defeated the third week of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief para sa top spot. On its second week, the movie grossed an additional P27.6 million placing second behind the debut of Alice in Wonderland. Including the intra-week showing of the movie, its cumulative gross now stands at P115 million.

With a 2-week gross of P115 million, that makes Miss You Like Crazy the current #1 Pinoy-made movie of 2010. Congrats and good job to Star Cinema!

Submission of Cinema One Originals Scripts Extended

Good news to all interested filmmakers! Be part in creating the future of Philippine Cinema.

Cinema One has extended the deadline for submission of a full narrative feature script for the 2010 Cinema One Originals Digital Movie Festival. New and final deadline is set on March 17 (Wednesday).

Parties who are interested to join Cinema One’s digital movie competition, whether professional, amateur or veteran filmmakers, are required to submit a full narrative feature script. Entries may also include character and story descriptions as well as a detailed production team line-up.

Entries should be in hard copy or CD, sent via snail mail or submitted in person to the Cinema One Office at the 8th floor of the ELJ Communications Center, along Eugenio Lopez Drive, Quezon City.

“Miss You Like Crazy” Earns P18 Million on First Day at Box Office

The John Lloyd Cruz-Bea Alonzo starrer, Miss You Like Crazy, opened in more than 100 theaters nationwide Wednesday with a bang, earning at least (and approximately) P18 million in the box office according to a source inside Star Cinema — the producer of the film. Last Tuesday, the Cathy Garcia-Molina-helmed rom-com premiered in two locations to overflowing crowds and screaming fans: one in Trinoma and the other one at the Megamall.

The movie is John Lloyd and Bea’s first team-up in three years, making Miss You Like Crazy a reunion project of sorts for the popular tandem.

Di pwedeng ma-predict kung gaano kalaki ang kikitain ng pelikula kung pagbabasehan lang ang first day of box office results nito. It can be recalled that the last Star Cinema movie starring Kim Chiu and Gerald Anderson had a solid opening of P12 na tumugma naman sa first week of grosses released by BOM na P41.4 million. Kaya lang after its first week, di na masyadong lumaki pa ang earning nito. In fact sa pangatlong linggo ng pelikula in theaters, nag-gross lang ito ng P77.5 million in total. Kaya di talaga ma-predict if the movie will end up with less than 75 million, 100 million or greater than 150 million. Only time will tell, ika nga kung paano mag-play ang “Miss You Like Crazy” sa mga manonood at sa publikong tatangkilik nito.

Best Pinoy Horror Movies

An informal survey of younger pinoy directors revealed the best horror movies that continue to influence Filipino film aftists.

The choices are:

“Gabi Ng Lagim� (Night of Horror) by underrated director Jose Miranda Cruz continues to be the classic Tagalog horror movie.

“Kung Bakit Dugo Ang Kulay Ng Gabi� (Why the Night is the Color of Blood) by Celso Ad. Castillo is an unforgetable foray into the realm of the unknown, with the vampiric roles gamely taken on by Rita Gomez and Celia Rodriguez in their long black outfits and lips flowing with blood.

A second Castillo film, “Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara” (Scaring Barbara to Death) is included in the list. This mystery thriller won awards in the Asian Film Festival years back.

And who could forget Peque Gallaga’s supernatural shockfest “Shake, Rattle and Rollâ€�, which became a serial franchise. “Shake, Rattle and Roll 9″ is up for release by end of the year. However, it was Gallaga’s original version that raised the fright bar for Filipino horror in succeeding years.

A most recent Filipino horror film, “Sigaw” has been produced for a Hollywood release. Director Yam Laranas is rightly proud of this development.

The American version, titled “The Echo” still has Laranas at the helm and also stars beauteous Filipina actress Iza Calzado who was in the original film.

Brilliante Mendoza said it might be self-serving for him to say so, but he thinks that the “Syquijor” is one of the best Filipino horror films of all time.

Jowee Morel (Paru-Parong Rosas) considers “Syquijor” experimental and “a breakthrough.”

For almost a decade, they made us believe in love. Such is the magic behind Bea Alonzo and John Lloyd Cruz’s phenomenally successful love team.

On February 24, the celebrated on-screen couple is set to recapture this magic once again in a special post-Valentine reunion for Star Cinema’s latest offering.
“Regalo namin ito sa mga fans namin,” says Bea, whose last big-screen team-up with John Lloyd in the movie One More Chance raked in millions at the box office and earned for them the titles of Box Office King and Queen for 2007. The film has not only boosted the couple’s local fan base but also strengthened their global following, making Bea and John Lloyd the most favorite love team among Filipino audiences all over the world.

To finally answer the fans’ clamor for another big screen team up after their last box office hit, what would be more perfect than another love story with a title that captures not just the fans’ common sentiment for the last three years but also the couple’s feelings about filming together again.

“’Yung pagiging sobra niyang mapagbiro sa set. ‘Yung tatawa lang kayo. ‘Yun ‘yung nakaka-miss,” says Bea about her leading man. John Lloyd, on the other hand, continues to believe in the value of their long history together. “Kasi yung pinagsamahan namin after ilang teleserye, nag-movie, yun ang hindi mo mababayaran, yun ang hindi mo mapapantayan.” This is probably the reason why John Lloyd thinks every new project with Bea becomes a celebration. “It becomes a big event all of a sudden. I’d like to believe na malaking step into maturity yun.”

Another cause for celebration in this new venture from Star Cinema is the couple’s reunion with box-office director Cathy Garcia-Molina, who also directed them in their last film together. This time, Direk Cathy guides John Lloyd and Bea toward embracing an off-beat romantic tale that would touch on the wrong sides of love, such as missteps and infidelity.

Direk Cathy further describes the plot as a love story told in a unique way, “Ibang-iba ang tono. Mas mature ang kilig moments.” In the film, John Lloyd plays a serious type of guy who suddenly found himself emotionally torn between her long-time girlfriend and a girl he just met. Bea, on the other hand, plays a bubbly lass whose destiny may have led her to the perfect man at the most imperfect time. “Madaming makaka-relate sa movie,” Bea enthuses, “Lalo na sa panahon ngayon. Sa mga di naniniwala sa destiny na naging jaded na, mapapa-isip ka, ‘ano kaya, totoo kaya ang destiny?’”

‘Miss You Like Crazy’ Trailer Released

The trailer of Star Cinema’s post-Valentine offering–Miss You Like Crazy–starring John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo premiered in cinemas on the opening day of “Paano Na Kaya.”

“Miss You Like Crazy” reunites the box-office tandem of John Lloyd Cruz, Bea Alonzo and Director Cathy Garcia-Molina. Their first film “One More Chance” was the biggest hit in 2007 giving John Lloyd his first box office king title and Bea her first box office queen title.

Also starring in the movie are Maricar Reyes and Megan Young. It will open in theaters on February 24, 2010.

2009 Top-Grossing Pinoy Films

The Star Cinema and Viva Films co-production, “You Changed My Life”, is the no. 1 local movie of 2009 and the only Pinoy film in history to surpassed the P200 million mark at the box office. ‘I Love You, Goodbye’ Climbs to No. 2 of MMFF Box-Office Race

As of January 6, 2010, the Star Cinema entry is now at no. 2 of the MMFF Box Office race.

Ang Panday is still the no. 1 top-grosser with P97.6 million. With 1 day left, can it reach the P100 million mark?

Snatching the 2nd position is Star Cinema’s I Love You, Goodbye which has now raked in a total of P91 million at the expense of Vic Sotto’s Ang Darling Kong Aswang which dropped to 3rd place.

Wapakman is still at the bottom of the list with only P2.6 million haul, one of the year’s biggest flop considering its production budget.

MMFF Box Office Tally from 2006 to 2009

Check out the final box-office grosses of the Metro Manila Film Festival in the last four years.

From 2006 to 2008, Star Cinema claimed the “MMFF Topgrosser” title for 3 consecutive years with their movies “Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo” (2006), “Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo” (2007) and “Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat” (2008). All three films surpassed the P100 million mark – the bracket which separates the “monster hits” to “mediocre hits.”

Star Cinema’s winning streak was broken in 2009 with GMA Films and Imus Productions’ “Ang Panday” being declared as topgrosser. Their entry, “I Love You, Goodbye”, was in respectable 2nd position considering that it’s classified by MTRCB as a PG-13 movie. Ang Panday, by the way, failed to cross the P100 million bracket with it’s total 14-day gross of P99.4 million, but nevertheless, it was declared the 2009 MMFF topgrosser.

In the last 4 years:

* The highest grossing MMFF was in 2008 with a total gross of P449.3 million

* The highest-grossing MMFF film of all time was Star Cinema’s “Ang Tanging Ina N’yong Lahat” starring Ai Ai delas Alas which garnered a whopping P171 million. Its extended run even pushed the outfit’s earnings to P197 million.

* Wapakman is considered the biggest flop in the last 4 years because its P2.6M gross did not justify its multi-million budget. 2007’s Banal had only P2.34M but it’s only an independent film with a very low budget so it’s not considered a “flop”. In fact, it even managed to win major awards!

* Regal Films at least have 2 entries in the annual filmfest, the most was in 2006 when they have four movies.

* Vic Sotto can be considered as the MMFF Box Office King because his movies in the last 4 years earned a whopping P429.2 million.

‘Boy’ Stands Out from the Gay-Themed Genre

“Boy” is not just another gay-themed indie film. It’s hailed by critics as a gem in the genre proliferated by thrash.

From the acclaimed director of “Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros”, comes a coming-of-age gay movie about a young gay poet who sells his prized comic book and action figure collection to spend a night with a macho dancer.

“Boy” is helmed by Auraeus Solito, acclaimed director of Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (2006), and Tuli (2007). Starring Aeious Asin and Aries Pena, the movie is now showing at the Robinson’s IndieSine and other selected cinemas.

SYNOPSIS: One evening, young budding poet (Adam) observes lip-synching drag-queens and dancing rent-boys (macho dancers) in a gay bar. The poet finds himself attracted to Aries, who comes from a poorer part of town. Selling his comic books so as to be able to afford the macho dancer for one night, Adam’s character buys Aries at the bar and brings him home for the New Year.

Sparks fly while celebratory fireworks go off outside the house and the boys forge a fragile connection that neither of them is certain will last. Boy is a coming-of-age tale of a sensitive boy who arrives at his first lesson about love and who learns to grow confidently into his own sexuality.

‘Boylets’ Opens in Selected Cinemas

Crisaldo Vicente Pablo, the director of contoversial skin flicks such as Showboyz, Quicktrip, Duda and Moreno is back with another provocative gay-themed digital film called “Boylets.”

oylets stars newcomers Joeffrey Javier, Charles Delgado, Rusty Adonis and Francis Sienes.

Boylets is about teenage Krys who is from a middle class family and his bunch of out of school friends who pass the time stealing copper electric wires and steel, betting cash in online computer games and doing sexual services to gay patrons. Krys’ best friend Joef is the leader of the pack and he is turning eighteen and is leaving the next day. Krys tries to control Joef’s last day and birthday celebration as he attempts to stop him from his plans. But will Krys be able to stop the guy he likes from leaving?

The film is showing on October 14, 2009 in selected theaters: Robinsons Galleria, Remar-Cubao, Isetann-Recto, and soon to be shown in Cebu and Davao.

"Ded Na Si Lolo" is RP's Entry to 2010 Oscars

The indie film “Ded Na Si Lolo” was chosen by the Film Academy of the Philippines to be the country’s entry to the 82nd Oscar Awards in 2010.

The dramedy movie is produced by APT Entertainment and was directed by Soxie Topacio. Starring in the movie are BJ Forbes, Elizabeth Oropesa, Gina Alajar, Roderick Paulate, Manilyn Reynes, Rainier Castillo, and Dick Israel.

Ded Na Si Lolo received a grade of “A” when it was shown in limited theaters last May.

It bested 11 other films contending for the right to represent the Philippines in the 2010 Oscars. Other films which were considered were:

Dingdong-Marian VS Bea-John Lloyd in Valentines 2010

Network war is happening once again in the season of the hearts come 2010 with a Dingdong-Marian starrer from GMA and John Lloyd-Bea starrer from Star Cinema.

The network war during Valentines season started in 2005 when GMA Films released “Let the Love Begin” starring Richard Gutierrez and Angel Locsin, and Star Cinema released “Dreamboy” starring Piolo Pascual and Bea Alonzo. It happened every year since then.

In 2008, the rival networks did not share the same playdate. GMA Films and Regal’s “My Bestfriend’s Girlfriend” starring Marian Rivera and Richard Gutierrez was shown in the earlier part of February. Star Cinema’s “My Big Love” starring Toni Gonzaga and Sam Milby occupied the later part of February.

The drill continued in the Valentines season this year when GMA Films/Regal released “When I Met U” starring Richard Gutierrez and KC Concepcion. It was shown on the earlier part of February while Star Cinema released in the latter part of the same month, the box-office smash hit “You Changed My Life” starring Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz.

In 2010, the king of Valentine movies Richard Gutierrez was supposed to have another offering with “Maybe This Time” reuniting him with former girlfriend Anne Curtis. But GMA seems to have another plan. Dingdong Dantes told the media that he and Marian Rivera is doing a romantic movie set for Valentines 2010.

Star Cinema, on the other hand, is also doing a romantic film for Valentines season. Box-office king John Lloyd Cruz will be reunited with Bea Alonzo in the said film.

If plans push through, this could be the scenario come February 2010. So which team are you in?
